Because Lea was studying for an exam, my mom (who came to visit!) and I decided to do a little sight-seeing before I begin my research.
We rented a car in Zurich and drove to Fussen, Germany by way of Liechtenstein (it exists!) and Austria. My terrible navigation skills actually almost got us to Italy, but I digress.
We spent the night in Fussen and went the next day to see the Bavarian castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau which were gorgeous.
The next day, we drove up the Romantische Strasse (Romantic Road)and made many more German friends (i.e., people at gas stations who gave us directions). While looking at the guide book, I realized that we would be driving past a church that we had studied in Art History 101. Professor Johnson was right, I did want to eat Wieskirche! It looked like a delicious cake, but instead of a stripper on the inside there were church-goers. That night we arrived in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a charming medieval town. After a dinner of schweinebraten and beer and a look about the town, we slept in a nice little bed and breakfast. Travel fun fact: In the hotels in Germany, they set up their pillows so they look like origami cups!
We woke up the next morning and looked around some more, then drove back to Zurich.
Yesterday, we caught the TGV to Paris (it didn't go nearly as fast as I had expected it too) and finally made it to Lea's apartment! I spent most of today getting an adapter for my electronics, getting my bearings, and catching up with Lea. Tomorrow, the research begins!
Language Update: My French is still rocky, albeit better than my non-existent German. Hopefully it will improve as I continue to speak with people here!
PS Blogger makes uploading difficult (for me at least) so I will put the majority of pictures up on facebook.
